Why the patterns at India's doorsteps belong on what you wear, and why we design with them.

Walk through any street in Hyderabad at 6 in the morning. At door after door, someone is bent over the threshold with a fistful of rice flour, placing dots on the ground and joining them into loops, petals and stars. By the time the city wakes up, the street is full of muggulu.

Nobody calls it geometry. We call it rangoli, kolam or muggu. But that is exactly what it is: sacred geometry, drawn fresh every day by people who never needed a textbook to learn it.

What sacred geometry actually is

Sacred geometry is the use of simple shapes to express order and meaning. The building blocks are few:

• The bindu (dot): the centre, the point where everything begins.
• The circle: wholeness and continuity. No beginning, no end.
• The triangle: direction. Pointing up, it rises. Pointing down, it grounds.
• The square: the earth, stability and the four directions.
• The spiral: growth that keeps unfolding, as in a sunflower head or a shell.
• The lotus: petals opening outward from a steady centre.

Combine them around a centre and you get a mandala. Combine them with intent and you get a yantra. India has built these shapes into temple ceilings, doorways, textiles and floors for centuries.

Rangoli is sacred geometry you already know

Look closely at a kolam or a muggu and the geometry is plain to see:

• It starts with a grid of dots. The chukkalu or pulli set the structure, the same way a mandala is built on a hidden grid.
• It is built around symmetry. Most designs mirror or rotate around a centre, exactly like a mandala.
• Many are drawn as one continuous line that loops around every dot and returns to where it began. Mathematicians and computer scientists have studied these line patterns for exactly this reason.
• It sits at the threshold. The pattern marks the line between the outside world and the home, and welcomes what is good inside.
• It is an act of giving. Traditionally drawn with rice flour, it feeds ants and birds through the day.
• It is made new every morning. Swept away by evening, drawn again at dawn. The practice is the point, not the permanence.

At Sankranti, when whole colonies compete with muggulu that fill the street, you are looking at one of the largest living traditions of geometry in the world. It just happens to be drawn by our mothers and grandmothers.

Why wear a sacred geometry motif

• A focus for stillness. In Indian traditions, mandalas and yantras have long been used as a point of focus for meditation.
• Timeless, not trendy. These motifs have lasted for centuries on temple walls and doorsteps. They will not look dated next season.
• Roots you can wear anywhere. A mandala saree works at a puja, a wedding or a boardroom. It carries India without looking like a costume.
• A story worth telling. When someone asks about the pattern, you have something real to say about where it comes from.

A note from One in the Universe on dressing for Navratri, and the collection we made for it.

It is 6 pm on the third night of Navratri. The aarti starts at 7. You open the wardrobe, and the question is the same as last night: what do I wear tonight?

Most of us solve Navratri one evening at a time. A saree bought in a hurry, a repeat from last year, a last-minute compromise because the one you wanted is still at the tailor. Nine nights become nine small decisions, and by the fifth night the joy has turned into logistics.

We think Navratri deserves a plan, not a scramble. So we designed one.
